You can always set the download directory to the iPod's mount point and
download directly there (or use symlinks in your home directory that link to
the iPod). Using Rockbox (rockbox.org), you can then play these files on the
iPod without the need for the iTunesDB-modifying stuff. If this still is a
problem, you can easily use gpodder as a library and come up with a quick
python script to rename the oddly-named files (see the gdfs utilities in
doc/dev/ in the gPodder source tarball).
