Was iTunes configured to sync automatically or did your restore the iPod to factory settings? I would like to be able to reproduce the problem if I can, but I am wondering if http://wiki.gpodder.org/wiki/FAQs#Why_does_gPodder_report_.22Cannot_open_device.22_when_syncing_to_an_empty_iPod.3F would resolve the problem? Could you please give this a try.
