Bug #: 1443
Summary: Extrapolate lengths (e.g. by computing channel
averages)
Classification: Unclassified
Product: gPodder
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: feature request
Priority: low
Component: Application
AssignedTo: [email protected]
ReportedBy: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Some episodes don't have duration information in the feed. It would be very
useful if gPodder estimated the duration for the user.
The average number of bytes per minute in the channel of a no-duration episode
is probably a good indicator of the bytes per minute in a no-duration episode,
and the number of bytes is given.
This might fail if feed-makers start changing encoders and encoding settings
(bitrates). A remedy is to give increased weight to more recent episodes.
It might also fail if feed-makers intermix different media types, e.g. heavy
ogg/vorbis and light ogg/speex files. A remedy would be to consider only files
of the same type when doing the extrapolation.
This might be a misfeature if the estimates turn out to often be inaccurate and
the user gets disappointed upon discovering this inaccuracy. The user's
expectation can probably be moderated by suffixing a "?" onto the estimated
durations.
