Let's separate a bit the things here, we're talking about two different
libraries.
About GraphHopper and graphs Peter can answer better.
But you need to follow carefully the instructions, i.e. place under the
right path both the map and the created graph files.
About Mapsforge maps, its overlays etc. you can post questions in its
mailing list:

We have there tutorials and samples about its API.
BTW GH sample has already a route drawing implementation to study.
