I do hope this is an oversight, and not official policy ...
My apologies--that came out much stronger than I meant it to. I
certainly realize that it's not practical to delay making any decision
waiting for some random comment.
Maybe I can try again without jumping to any conclusions:
Do I understand correctly that the features are being dropped entirely?
Yes
Did the decision include some consideration that these features may
still have some use above and beyond the original performance issues?
Yes. The golden Rule is that 80% of all users only need 20% of all
features. But it is never the same 20%.
When discussing a feature there is always someone that finds a use case
for this feature that makes sense.
In this case we had a discussion with people who argued for the feature,
but in the end we decided it was not
worth it. Please keep in mind that we never remove a feature without a
reason. In this cases these features
where introduced in the pre historic times of 16-Bit computers. And the
original reasons why these features
are introduced are not longer valid. While making changes to the core to
keep it modern, lightweight and fast,
we sometimes need to touch those very old features and keeping them
would really cost a lot of time.
It is always a discussion about what do we loose and what do we win and
sometimes a features looses.
But even for features that most people find useless nowadays, there are
people using them for uknown
purposes. If these are valid use cases where many users benefit from,
then please submit an issue
and if it gets votes than we will surely try to re introduce that feature.
And before there is a discussion again, "we" in this context are the
active developers on the graphics module
that try to implement all the wishes of the community and the user base.
But with limited resources there
must be compromises.
Is it too late to consider keeping the features, with access through
the options toolbar?
Question is, are they really still that important to clutter very costly
user interface space?
Do we still need all of them? Do we maybe need other new features to
solve the use
cases that where previously solved with the removed features?
Best regards,
Christian
