If I want to insert a rasterized image into a drawing, presentation or text docment, it's no problem really. Insert->picture->from file, pick what you like, there you are. It displays correctly, it prints correctly, looks good in PDFs, everything fine. JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIFF (except maybe for 16bit, but that's secondary) ... you name it.

I am not sure whether there are non-roundabout ways of dealing with it, but with vector formats it just wont work like that.

- WMF, EMF: work mostly, except for transparency. Even if I produce them with OOo draw, sometimes there are nasty surprises. Can't ever use them without doublechecking. Also, not many linux programs are capable of producing these formats.

- eps: Golden industry standard. Prints just fine on Postscript printers. Outside of that? Only preview pictures. That rules out using them in presentations, printing on non-PS-Printers, exporting to PDF, sending documents around to other people ("hey, you pictures look blocky"). There's lots of software able to render and print eps with no problem, why can't OOo? There must be some open source library for that.

- svg: Golden Open Source standard. Since 2001, issue 2497 is open with the aim of creating an import filter. Mind you, that's a filter that is supposed to allow draw to _edit_ svgs. It would still only allow me to use them as images after I opened them im draw and copy/pasted them. Then there's issue 49991 (opened 2005), which asks for supporting svg as image format for embedded images. My Linux has svgs all over its Desktop, at least two of my browsers support them, but if I want to use them in an OOo document, I need to either rasterize them first or convert them into some other vector format whose specifications will never include everything that svg can do.

Please people, at least one of these formats should be supported fully. Or how am I supposed to but faboulous lineart created by another software into OOo. Don't isolate OOo like that in the world of vector graphics, even MS Office can display and print eps files with no problem!

So, yeah, I'm trying to make you vote for issue 49991. Don't know if there's another similar issue open already for eps, so do that if you prefer, but give me a way of using my really good 3rd-party-software-generated vector images in OOo documents!

 Thanks,

   Zak

P.S.: There's actually a workaround to have real eps images in PDF files. Print to postscript file, then (under linux) ps2pdf. But why can't OOo do this by itself?
