Yes, but what I'm trying to understand is what exactly needs to be solved. From the discussion, I gather that most of the problem is not a bug in r.out.gdal, but rather the incapacity of certain viewers to display certain types of data. r.out.gdal does export an image to be viewed, but raster data for analysis and a viewer cannot handle this.
