Michael

it looks like r3.in ascii is broken in GRASS6.4.3

I replaced the file on the web site with an unzipped file
http://skagit.meas.ncsu.edu/~helena/grasswork/JR_7408MR_2m_t70.asci

which imports OK in GRASS7
GRASS 7.0.svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.in.ascii JR_7408MR_2m_t70.asci
out=test3drast
Loading data ... (570x594x11)
 100%

but it fails to import in grass6.4.3
GRASS 6.4.3svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.in.ascii JR_7408MR_2m_t70.asci
out=test3drast63
Loading data ... (570x594x11)
ERROR: asciiToG3d: read failed

but file created in grass7 and exported in grass6.4.3 also fails to import
GRASS 6.4.3svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.out.ascii test3drast
out=test3drast643out.asci dp=3
GRASS 6.4.3svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.in.ascii test3drast643out.asci
out=test3drast643outin
Loading data ... (570x594x11)
ERROR: asciiToG3d: read failed

and file created in grass6.4.3 and exported in 6.4.3 also fails to import
r.to.rast3
JR_1974_1m,JR_1995_1m,JR_NH_1998_1m,JR_NH_19991104_1mf,JR_NH_2001_JanMarch_1m,JR_NH_20070708_1m,JR_NH_2008_1m
 out=jr7408test
GRASS 6.4.3svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.out.ascii jr7408test
out=jr7408test.asci dp=2
GRASS 6.4.3svn (nc_spm_05):~/grasswork > r3.in.ascii jr7408test.asci
out=jr7408testoutin
Loading data ... (570x594x11)
ERROR: asciiToG3d: read failed

that looks like a critical bug to me
