I would have another suggestion: I work a lot with Ableton Live, a Sound Sequencer. The help ind Live is solved as a window that always shows the information on the object the mouse is currently hovering over. You can, of course, get rid of that window if you know a lot about the program. I think thats a very useful tool. You can pack a lot more of information into it than you can in a status bar or a tooltip.
