It works if I create the token with curl on the commandline:
$ curl -s -L --user "username:password" -XPOST "http://<graylog node
ip>:12900/users/username/tokens/icinga"
{"name":"icinga","token":"<generated
token>","last_access":"1970-01-01T00:00:00.000Z"}~
