It has a web interface that's kind of like a ressources monitor, showing you the CPU%/disk space being used on the nodes of the cluster. Try going to http://vm2:9200/_plugin/kopf/#!/nodes (where vm2 is the hostname of one of the elasticsearch nodes). The interface is nice and shows you that the storage is indeed done by the ES nodes.
