Can You give an example of when such an end user should be modifying
scripts to begin with?

Are there any (non-trivial) examples where either
1) the author cannot provide the scripts with the 'correct' meta-data
to begin with, or
2) anyone expected to edit the meta-data aren't confident of
performing the edit?
