Inquire into Tarabai's custody death: Court

The Kerala High Court has directed the DGP-Law and Order, DGP-Prisons, Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate, etc to conduct an inquiry into the suspicious circumstances under which Tarabhai, an inmate of Thiruvananthapuram Mental Health Centre committed suicide. The HC directed the authorities to file a report within 10 days.

In addition, Justice K Padmanabhan Nair also asked the Director of Health Services to file a report regarding the incident. The DGP-Law and Order has been directed to cause an inquiry by the DIG regarding the circumstances under Tarabhai was arrested, offenses alleged against her, stage of investigation and other details.

The DGP-Prisons was directed to conduct a detail enquiry under which Tarabhai was sent to Mental Health Centre and treatment given to her. The HC also issued direction to explain why Tarabhai was remanded to Central jail instead of sub jail. It can be recalled that a Malayalam daily had reported that Tarabhai was deliberately made a mental patient by the jail officials when she was undergoing imprisonment at the central jail. After reading the news, the High Court took the case suo moto.
