New Delhi: Delhi Police commissioner K K Paul has said that his department will go for a fresh appeal in the Jessical Lall murder case and it will offer protection to all the witnesses this time around.
He also said that whoever is found to have committed any lapses in investigation will be brought to book.
Facing all-round criticism for shoddy investigation into the case, he said the police was already examining grounds for an appeal.
Earlier, in an interview with PTI, Paul ruled out any inquiry into the lapses in the probe.
"There is no inquiry of any sort," he said when asked about reports in a section of the media about a vigilance inquiry to probe lapses in investigation of the case.
"It is not a vigilance matter," said Paul, who was summoned by senior officials in the Union Home Ministry after angry reactions to the police investigation in the case, which could not prove its case in the court.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ranjit Narayan said police, in consultation with the Directorate of Prosecution, was examining the judgement in the case.
"We are studying the grounds for appeal," Narayan said.
This is the first time Delhi Police has spoken about the case since a trial court acquitted all nine accused in the case on February 21, for lack of evidence.
The government did not rule out re-investigation after members in both Houses of Parliament made a vociferous demand for retrial of the murder case, expressing concern over the acquittal of all the nine accused.
"As the law exists today, no person should be tried twice in any case. Supreme Court has ordered reinvestigation in some cases and it has become a kind of law also for us. It can be followed," Home Minister Shivraj Patil told Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour responding to the agitated members.
"We should go to the very root and find out who is really responsible and whatever" in the case.
