Thiruvananthapuram: A 32-year-old remand prisoner, who was arrested by the police on the charge of selling illicit liquor, died at Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Thursday. The police identified the deceased as Ananda Raj, resident of Jersy Farm near Vithura. Anandaraj was arrested by the police on Sunday on the charge of possessing illicit liquor. He was produced before the court and remanded to the Sub Jail at Attakulangara here the same day. The same night, Anandaraj was admitted to the hospital after he reportedly showed severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. He died while under treatment at the prisoner's cell at the MCH. Anandaraj's relatives, who spoke to The Hindu , said that he had died from internal injuries sustained during police torture at the Vithura police station. The police have denied the allegation. The Fort police have registered a case of unnatural death. A large number of people from Vithura had come to take the body of Anandaraj from the MCH mortuary. The Revenue Divisional Officer who reached the spot said he would conduct an inquiry and report the matter to the Government. Sunday night the police had taken Anand Raj into custody on for the
alleged sale of illicit liquor. The police had also recovered 10 litres
of arrack from him. He was produced before the District Magistrate on
the same day and remanded to judicial custody in the district jail. |

jail authorities had shifted him to Medical College Hospital when he
showed signs of uneasiness. On Wednesday, his condition worsened and he
was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Medical College where he
died at 10.50pm. |

Vithura sub-inspector of police, Rasith, alleged that the district jail
authorities had informed him about shifting Anand Raj to Medical
College Hospital only on Wednesday. |

| Commenting
on the incident, the District Jail Superintendent KP Rajagopalan Nair
denied any instance of police assault. He said that Anand Raj had shown
symptoms of fits while bathing and fainted. Soon, he was taken to the
Medical College Hospital and was shifted to the Intensive Care unit at
8pm. "The police received the message regarding his death by 10.50pm,"
he clarified. |
