Thiruvananthapuram:
A 32-year-old remand prisoner, who was arrested by the police on the charge
of selling illicit liquor, died at Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on
Thursday.
The
police identified the deceased as Ananda Raj, resident of Jersy Farm near
Vithura. Anandaraj was arrested by the police on Sunday on the charge of
possessing illicit liquor.
He was
produced before the court and remanded to the Sub Jail at Attakulangara here
the same day.
The
same night, Anandaraj was admitted to the hospital after he reportedly showed
severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
He died
while under treatment at the prisoner's cell at the MCH. Anandaraj's
relatives, who spoke to The Hindu
, said that he had died from internal injuries sustained during police
torture at the Vithura police station.
The
police have denied the allegation. The Fort police have registered a case of
unnatural death.
A large
number of people from Vithura had come to take the body of Anandaraj from the
MCH mortuary.
The
Revenue Divisional Officer who reached the spot said he would conduct an
inquiry and report the matter to the Government.
The
police were awaiting the post-mortem examination report to know the cause of
Anandaraj's death.
