THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S. Soman on Thursday directed the police officials to conduct an investigation to find out the whereabouts and other personal details of the eight children who were rescued from an unauthorised orphanage near Kallayam.

The Magistrate has also directed the police to ascertain the legality of the orphanages functioning in various police station limits in the district.

The direction comes in the wake of a report filed by the district probation officer requesting the Magistrate to take appropriate action against the proprietors of `Light of Life,' an orphanage, which functioned at Pallimukku without the necessary documents.

As per the report filed by the probation officer, there were 13 children at the orphanage. Five children have been "removed to an unknown place," the report stated. The children comprising five girls and three boys, aged between 11 and 15, were produced before the Magistrate on Thursday. They are Sofiya, 15; Loothiya, 13; Rani, 11; David, 11; Manju, 14; Amrutha, 13; Arun, 11; and Alex, 9. The Magistrate, in his order, observed that neither the children nor the persons running the orphanage could provide information to trace the whereabouts of the rescued children. "Hence it is crystal clear that it is an unauthorised institution and the children have been taken away from somewhere else," the order stated.

Meanwhile, the Sub-Inspector of police, Vattappara, under whose territorial jurisdiction the orphanage falls, also filed a report before the Magistrate pointing out that the proprietor of the institution had been running the orphanage without the necessary documents.

The Magistrate directed the police to initiate prosecution against all those who have been "involved in the nefarious activities," apart from deputing the district probation officer to ensure the educational needs of the children.

The rescued children have been rehabilitated at the Sri Chithra Poor Home and the Juvenile home respectively after conducting medical examination.
