PALAKKAD: One of the longest satyagraha in modern Kerala, the 1,588-day stir against the Coca-Cola unit at Plachimada, was called off on Saturday.
At a press conference here, leaders of the Adivasi Protection Samithi Velur Swaminathan and Mailamma said they were calling off the agitation, as the Government notified the ban on manufacture and sale of colas in the State.
They demanded that the Government pay compensation to people affected by the operations of the company, as it was brought here by the previous Left Democratic Front Government. Otherwise, they would go to court.
They said the samithi leaders would meet Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, seeking compensation to farmers and other local people for the depletion of groundwater owing to the functioning of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd. at Plachimada.
