*3.75 m people in Kerala below the poverty line

TRIVANDRUM -- Kerala has 3.75 million people living below the poverty line
(BPL), according to the socio-economic survey conducted by the National
Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).

The survey revealed that there were more poor in urban areas than in rural
areas, in sharp contrast to the trend seen in other states. While the poor
in rural areas comprise only 13.28 per cent, it is as high as 20.2 per cent
in urban areas. The average consumption expenditure in rural areas in Kerala
is Rs.1, 013, which is the highest among all states. Urban Kerala comes
second on the list with an expenditure of Rs.1, 291. The first position is
occupied by Punjab.
