Special Correspondent http://www.hindu.com/2007/08/08/stories/2007080862221400.htm * Questions over implementation of the report recommendations * * * MUMBAI: The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) coalition Government in Maharashtra is under pressure to examine the implementation of the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission report on the riots of 1992-93 which took place after the Babri Masjid demolition. Last week, the Supreme Court, in response to various petitions demanding the implementation of the report, said Maharashtra filed a detailed report on the steps taken on the basis of the report. However, the petitioners said appropriate action had not been taken under the law. Hence, it directed them to file a joint affidavit within six weeks mentioning the failure, if any. The case will be heard in the last week of October. After the designated TADA court recently handed over verdicts in the serial bomb blasts case which took place after the riots of 1993, many Muslim organisations and voluntary groups are stepping up the demand to bring the culprits in the riots to book. Signature campaigns have attracted people demanding justice the world over and petitions under the Right to Information Act said little or no action had been taken against the rioters of 1992-93, including leaders of the Shiv Sena. All cases against Sena chief Bal Thackeray were withdrawn. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh held a high-level meeting on Monday and directed the police to examine the lapses if any. The Action Committee for the Implementation of the Srikrishna Commission Report filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court in 1998 itself demanding that the Sena-BJP Government which, at that time had rejected the report, be directed to implement it in toto. Naseem Khan of the Action committee and Congress MLA, said a detailed list on the Government's 'lapses' was also filed in 2001 in response to a request from the apex court. The Action Taken Report submitted by the Special Task Force set up to look into the riot cases was also unsatisfactory, he said. On July 24, Mr. Khan and others initiated a dialogue with the Chief Minister and he agreed to look into the issue.
