The attachment shows that the consumers are not innocent idiots - they
have had enough of the malpractices from traders, from jacked up
prices to adulterated goods. I think they are so fed up with the
customer unfriendliness of many traders that they will run into the
arms of big retailers when they set up shop.

The contention that the big retailers will raise prices once they grab
the market is nonsense. Even WalMart, that has almost complete
domination in US retail sector for decades, have constantly lowered
prices. The said scenario will happen only in our long deceased 'mixed
model' economy, where a few private monopolies are allowed to hold
sway over the market. The liberalized retail sector will have a number
of players, which will ensure lower prices and higher quality.

Lower prices alone are not sufficient for retailers to grab the
market. There are a number of variables that consumers look at, from
accessibility to availability of rotating credit without collateral to
personal equations. These are the strengths of the kirana shops that
will ultimately help them survive the onslaught of big retail.

Reliance and other big retailers give better value to farmers and
consumers not by some sleight of hand, but by eliminating middlemen
and streamlining the supply chains, boosting efficiency. Upto 40% of
the farm produce go waste - eaten by pests and rotten away. The entry
of big retailers will give a fillip to the investment in storage and
transportation infrastructure that will greatly benefit the farmers.
It is interesting to see that people who harp on farmers' woes 24x7
oppose people who give better value to the very farmers!

Best regards,
Murali.
