An article by Jaithirth 'Jerry' Rao. I generally agree with Jerry that partition had good (unintended) consequences. But his idea about a buffer state against barbarians from north is a lot off the mark. Today, neither Iran nor Afghanistan is in a position to launch raids on India, buffer state or not. Nor is it clear that they have any such intentions either. Pakistanis are the real inheritors of Nadir Shah and Abdali, though lacking the military might of those early marauders. A buffer state should be a friendly entity - which Pakistan decidedly is not, nor intends to be in the foreseeable future. A Punjabi or Sindhi state could provide an equally effective buffer, if at all one is needed. The fragments of Pakistan still could turn out to be rogue states, but with much diminished capacity to do mischief. Alas, we allowed the buffer state that was most needed - Tibet - to be swallowed up by the Chinese! Best regards, Murali. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
