As you know, Free Software has taken deep roots in Kerala, with the
state government's IT Policy itself clearly supporting it. As the Policy
document says, the objective of the policy is to build a Knowledge
Society, as opposed to just promoting IT as an industry. In this
context, we need to promote Free Knowledge, which is the equivalent of
Free Software in the sphere of culture.

Free Knowledge is knowledge that is made available with freedom for the
users. This is exemplified by Wikipedia, which is an encyclopaedia built
by people for the people, the contents of which can be used for any
purpose by anyone without copyright restrictions. Creative Commons is a
movement that has created several licences under which creative works
like music, literature, photographs and so on can be distributed without
all the restrictions imposed by copyright laws. Globally, we already
have a large body of creative works available under Creative Commons
licences. As you may know, the state government is favourable to making
creative works made with public funds available to the public under an
appropriate Free licence.

IT Mission is organising a meeting of Free Knowledge and Free Software
enthusiasts at Inforpark, Kochi, on October 27. A web site has been
registered for the purpose at http://free-knowledge.web4all.in/ and a
mailing list has been started to discuss various aspects of the meeting
and also to continue our discussions later. To join the list, please
visit http://www.freelists.org/list/freeknowledge. If you are interested
in participating in the meeting, please do join the mailing list, since
this forms an important part in communicating about the meeting.
