The seeds of separatism can grow in any soil, it seems. Even the most prosperous, liberal countries that have maintained unity for centuries, countries that are most accommodating to different groups with structural arrangements are no exception. Though the Left generally projects separatism as a good thing - in its politically correct synonym, 'self-determination', separatism is often the result of the worst kind of identity politics and intolerance to others. The troubles of Belgium underscore this (remember, Europe itself is in the midst of erasing national borders):
