Hello all,
The situation at the Faculty is getting worse by the day.
1) As we all feared, the teaching standards have dropped to abyssmal
depths in the Dept. of Art History.Not only is the information given out in
class grossly incorrect but when the veracity of such information is
questioned by the students they are being threatened with disciplinary
action!
Recently, in a lecture conducted by Balamani M.( against whom the students
have already lodged a complaint for incompetent teaching) the final year Art
History students were asked to leave the class. Balamani told them that they
were not supposed to sit in on an M.A. first year lecture. This of course is
a ridiculous excuse since we all have been always encouraged to attend Art
History classes regardless of whether it is our scheduled lecture or
not.Anyhow, not wanting to disturb the class, the final year students left
and some of them started a project discussion on their own downtairs.
Meanwhile Balamni called up the present Head of the Dept. of Art History,
Kushwaha Sir,who came down and started screaming at the students who were
having the informal project discussion. He told them that they were not
allowed to conduct classes on their own and threatened them with
disciplinary action.He would not stop to listen to anybody and kept shouting
at the top of his voice and then shoved everyone out of the Dept. and put
a LOCK on it!
It is very clear from this incident how autocratic things have become in the
Art History Dept.The students are very frustrated, if they attend classes,
and ask valid questions, they are asked to leave and when they try to make
some headway on their own they are accused of taking over the teacher's job
and threatened with rustication.
2) There had been a lot of general body meetings regarding garba before
the festival started. It was decided by common consensus (among the
students, teachers, and the Dean himself) that there should be no outsiders
allowed inside faculty premises this time due to obvious security
hazards.But despite this, three passes each, have been issued to the
students to invite outsiders.This is a clear betrayal of democratic
prnciples and shows that now nothing is left to the faculty as a whole to
decide.It seems that a select few have all the say in everything.
This is the situation as of today.
