Friends,
Sorry, IPL final kept me from reporting today's meeting thus far( and
watching this final made me really nonessential
on individuals!!..even starting to love erstwhile racists)

Prof.M.K.Sanu inaugurated the convention. He applauded the movement for its
commitment to substantive values like post death justice. Such moral
positions could bring in an entirely new perspective on crime, punishment
and justice, he opined.

K.Gireeshkumar, in his presidential address made the following observations.
1.The issue touches both health and law domains.CRPC has defined the
proicedure for postmortem in clear terms. i.e: it has to be done by a civil
surgeon or a doctor appointed by the government.
2.The only justification pointed out by way of supporting the order allowing
post mortem in Amrutha hospital is that it is done for study purposes.
Indian Medical Council stipu;;ates that a medical student should witness (
not " conduct") 10 postmortems . There are already provisions for that in
govt. hospitals.
3.The government has given power to the forensic department in Amrutha
unconditional power for conducting postmortem. This is illegal and anti
democratic. Government have no power over Amrutha or their forensic
department.
4.One could cover up all those details which are supposed to be unveiled
through postmortem. This will lead to a situation where the powerful and
moneyed class will gain.
5. Through such a step the government is unashamedly proclaiming that it no
more have accountability toward citizens.

K K Koch said that he always stood with this movement out of his
understanding that it deals with the issues of marginalised among
marginalised. This truggle is not limited to mere legal points, but aims at a
new democratic culture, he added.Dr.K.K.Rajaram siad that he being a
practicing doctor, wouldn't adjudicate between private and government
doctors, bbut the chances for individuals withstanding pressures are high in
government sector as there is relatively more job security and organised
strength. In the private sector, there are no real experts but for
namesake. The presuure of the management over doctors is absolute. He raised
the most important point, that nobody demanded private postmortem in Kerala
except the self financing managements.K.M.SalimKumar, dalit writer and
activist observed that Kerala ranks low in terms of justice done toward
marginalised sections.Any specialist, however capable s/he might be, have to
bow down tto the management pressure. So, relatively, public sector gives
more options for the peope as it at least ensures space for protests.Felix J
Pulludan, KPSethunath, TKVasu, Jacob Lasar, Muhammad Sali, PV Raju,
OPRaveendran, K K Chandran, Yesudas Varappuzha and Joy Ambatt spoke.
K.Rajmohan welcomed the gathering.

More than hundred individuals attended the convention. Those who signed the
minutes includes George, Muhammad Rafeek, seyd VK, Reshma Bharadwaj, Thomas,
