Sub: Request to participate in a meeting to plan the Peoples Tribunal Against Torture (PTT) The National Project on Preventing Torture in India (NPPT) has been initiated by the European Union (EU), Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNSt), South India Cell for Human Rights Education & Monitoring(SICHREM) and People's Watch. The objective of the project is to demand for the ratification of the UN Convention Against Torture (CAT), its Optional Protocols I and II and also to demand a domestic law in the country for preventing torture and protecting victims and witnesses. The project was initiated in the year 2006, aiming to initiate a national level model campaign for the prevention of torture in India with the above mentioned objectives. The project is implemented in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. During the last two years the project in Karnataka , through an intensive monitoring process, till date 648 cases of torture by police have been documented from the districts of Mandya, Mysore, Chamrajnagar, Kodagu, Haveri and Kolar.599 Legal interventions have been initiated. As part of the above efforts, a State level People's Tribunal on Police Torture is planned to be organised on the 12 & 13 August 2008 at Bangalore, Karnataka along with many like minded organizations and movements.
