We asked the PPC (Pre-primary center) and campaign as well as legal intervention for opening of primary school which is guaranteed under article 21A of constitution of India.But there is no mentioned about it in report at all. Center in Ruap village is not a school-center at all. There is food grain; there are books of organization for activist not for the children. We distributed the copies, bag and pencil to the childrens.After our fight they received red ration cards,voters cards there. Any body and organization have right to refuse, but based on facts and consultation with party. Asha will put the site report on website. Look website, I already some years before, wrote the Asha that we did not need the project, because we worked there with support of other organization. Without looking the all papers and documents along with facts, publishing on web immediately without consultation of party is against the natural justice which called as judgmentalism. Earlier that day we had called up the contact person, Mr. Pandey, and informed him that we will be visiting the project later in the afternoon. He asked us to meet at Robertsganj. When we reached Robertsganj, we once more called Mr. Pandey, who then met us and took us to the village. The village, called Robe Ghasiya basti, is about 15 minutes drive from the main Robertsganj market. The village is situated on the road and Mr. Pandey told us that some years back when Mayawati had visited the area, the Ghasiya community folks had come down from the hills. They liked this place and Mayawati had given them the land to settle down. Mr. Pandey also showed us a memorial that the organization had built in memory of the 18 children who had died of starvation. Standing on the road, we could see the primary school on the opposite side. The distance would hardly be a 10 minute walk. We were told that the community was going to participate in some event but would meet with us for 10 minutes. We were taken to a small hut that functions as the school room. This was evident from the charts and posters that had been put up. Initially the older folks started crowding into the room but we told them that we want to talk with the children. About 10 children were ushered in. Mr. Pandey then introduced us to Mr. Sukkhan who is one of the tutors. We asked Mr. Sukkhan what he teaches the children. Mr. Sukkhan told us that he teaches that education is important and about environment. We wanted to know the specifics. Does he teach them alphabets? Arithmetic? Mr. Pandey intervened and said that there was one more teacher Mr. Ram Surat but unfortunately he had gone to the market. We were then told that about 40-45 children attend the school. However, this number varied widely between various members of the community so I asked to see the attendance register. I was then told that the attendance register was with Mr. Ram Surat and that it has been locked up. No one it seemed had the key so we could not see the register. The centre runs in the morning and evening. In the morning the children study till 9 am when they go to the formal school and then they come back at 4pm for some more classes. Mr. Pandey then told us that the organization has provided plenty of books. This was kept in a box in that room only. We asked it to be opened and picked a book at random. Meantime, we asked the children which school they attended. All the children told us that they went to the primary school opposite the road. They are provided mid day meals and that the menu changes every day. We then asked a girl to read from the book. She started haltingly. We asked her does she get to read these books? She said no. That whenever they ask the teachers to provide them the books, they are scolded and refused. And that they hardly ever came to the centre. This was reiterated by all of them. Then we asked why they had not gone to school that day? One girls said that her clothes were dirty but a small boy told us that they had all been stopped from going to school because they were told that some people are coming to distribute clothes to them. Mr. Pandey then informed me that a person called Mahesh is in charge of this centre along with 20 other villages. Unfortunately, Mr. Mahesh could also not meet with us that day. IMPRESSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: All the children attend school and I do not see the need for this centre at this place. The organization would much better ensuring that the school functions properly. The teacher Mr. Sukkan did not know anything and I am not sure why he was hired as a teacher. None of the teachers at this point are paid anything. Both Anjani bhai and I were upset that the organization had told the children that we are coming to distribute clothes. The teachers obviously do not allow the children to read any book available with them. None of the children we talked to came to the centre or indeed wanted to come.
