I hope saying this will not offend anyone (it is not intended to) but I have some doubts about how everyone seems to agree this is the worst thing to happen to India in years. As far as I can see these attacks in Mumbai stand out because of their spectacular nature--the Taj hotel and the Oberoi being attacked and rich and foreign guests being taken hostage creates enormous 'spectacular' value (just like 9/11 did). And because of the spectacular media effect and because the terrorits were targetting cosmopolitan circles, the repercusions for India in terms of global investor confidence and these kind of things will be much greater than with other instances of violence. In that sense it is somewhat understandable that the events get so much more coverage. But why should critical social activists consider this terrorist attack any worse, in ethical terms, than other instances of violence that have occured in India lately? Why is it, as Faking News suggests, ok to have commercial breakes when reporting on terror attacks where ordinary Indians in ordinary places were killed but can we not have commercial breakes when also rich elites and foreigners are targetted and economic national interests are directly at stake? Obviously I think these commerical breakes during news reporting are always pretty repugnant but I ask you to explain to me why they are any more so now than when only ordinary people are killed. Is it an attack on "India" when the Taj hotel is in flames, but not so when a dalit hut is burning? This is what elites and the media of course would like us to take for granted but I feel I must resist this.... Luisa
