A passing Comment

Alright.. if things hold, its back to the board for our political
scientists. The Congress is back to being the biggest (by a margin) party in
the country and its back to the 1980s.
Far from it, this is a not a vote for reforms...Not at all. that would be
complete mis-reading of the mandate. the Congress went to town asking for a
mandate on its NREGA, Bharat Nirman performance. They didn't mention Growth
or Reform anywhere.

It was the reform lobby which was skeptical about the NREGA and even wanted
to scuttle it. And by all means, the NREGA is a programme that is a
deviation from neoliberalism. It eats into the FRBM, it is a spending
programme used both for stimulus and for demand driving, and most
importantly it is rural (as of now). In other words, it is anti-reform.

Manmohan Singh didn't contest elections. Chidambaram is trailing (as of now)
in Sivaganga. So, I hope the Congress can get the story
