Dear Daniel Bhai, Thanks for directing the question to me. But I've no easy answer.
Reality is far oftener than not pretty complex. Chavez is of course a great fighter. But he also cuts corners, at times. (Supports the repressive and regressive Mullahcracy in Iran under popular attack.) As others do. He is no orthodox (Marxist) socialist. He heads and runs a capitalist state, by all means. But he is also trying to rewrite orthodoxy. At times, he poses himself as a Marxist. Is, in fact, surrounded by a number of radical Marxists. Michael Lebowitz is the best known one. Is on the best of terms with Fidel / Cuba. He also calls himself a social democrat. (This article is an illustration.) The two are not one and the same. But then he is also trying to rewrite orthodoxy. He needs and deserves support. But not of the blind variety. No one deserves that. He is a hero no doubt. But not a messiah. No one is. And as far as heroes are concerned, let alone messiahs, personality cult and authoritarianism always lurk in the background. We need to consciously counter that.
