Thrissur: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma has said that Central government’s
proposed Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Act 2009 is an
infringement on State’s power.

Addressing a meeting of fish workers unions here on Thursday, he said that
the Act, which had been proposed in the name of national security, would
harm States fishermen.
Draft Bill

“The draft Bill was prepared without consulting States. The entry of
foreign ships into the territorial waters would create tension along coastal
area. The Act is inimical to traditional fish workers,” he said.

The State government has urged the Centre to hold a meeting of Fisheries
Ministers of all States. The next cabinet meeting would discuss the issue in
detail, the Minister said.

The fishermen unions declared that they would oppose the Act. V. Dinakaran
(Dheevara Sabha), K. Purushothaman (C.I.T.U), A. K. Bhava (AITUC), Pulluvila
Lowrance (UTUC), T. Peter (Independent Fishermen Union), Chavara Sarasan
(Mathsya Thozhilali Congress (S)), Charles George (TUCI), Ummar Ottummal
(STU), O. B. Raveendran (BMS), Joseph Xavier Kalappurakkal (Boat Operators
Association) and Thankachan (Janata Mathsya Thozhilali Union) participated
in the meeting.

A seminar on impact of the Indo-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement on the fisheries
sector followed the meeting.
