Sarma addressing a meeting of fish workers’ union leaders in Thrissur on Thursday. * Thrissur: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma has said that Central government’s proposed Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Act 2009 is an infringement on State’s power. Addressing a meeting of fish workers unions here on Thursday, he said that the Act, which had been proposed in the name of national security, would harm States fishermen. Draft Bill “The draft Bill was prepared without consulting States. The entry of foreign ships into the territorial waters would create tension along coastal area. The Act is inimical to traditional fish workers,” he said. The State government has urged the Centre to hold a meeting of Fisheries Ministers of all States. The next cabinet meeting would discuss the issue in detail, the Minister said. The fishermen unions declared that they would oppose the Act. V. Dinakaran (Dheevara Sabha), K. Purushothaman (C.I.T.U), A. K. Bhava (AITUC), Pulluvila Lowrance (UTUC), T. Peter (Independent Fishermen Union), Chavara Sarasan (Mathsya Thozhilali Congress (S)), Charles George (TUCI), Ummar Ottummal (STU), O. B. Raveendran (BMS), Joseph Xavier Kalappurakkal (Boat Operators Association) and Thankachan (Janata Mathsya Thozhilali Union) participated in the meeting.
