Hi
first days report of Vahana pracharana jadha
today eight women participated in the jadha at different times (if we include
chitralekha and her daughter then it becomes ten).
Jaseela, Usha Palakunnu and Baby Palakunnu ( both of them convernors of
Kasargode sthreevedi),reshma, rekha, kaveri, beena and ajitha.
More women are flowing to the hotel.
Our current guess is that tommorrow around fifteen women will be with the jatha
(we will have to hire another vehicle)
It was not such smooth sailing though. Our jeep driver was threatened and he
almost withdrew from the jadha, the shop which accepted to print the flux
withdrew around yesterday midday, but luckily we could find another agencyquick
enough.
jadha was recieved with mixed responses. Almost collective resistance by auto
rickshaw drivers. Every auto driver in and around payyanur seems to be an eye
witness to the incident on january 20th (there must have been a huge rally of
auto rickshaw drivers at the time!!!!)
At each point where jadha stopped for corner meetings, we had around  four or
more small group discussions while we went to give the notice of the
convention. At Perumba a gang of around 100 people gathered around us ,and
started shouting. the ensuing arguementation is in itself a long story.
Why support this bad woman was the common question. And we were entrusted with
task of reforming chitralekha.
But there were also people (especially women in the crowd who silently nodded
with us and showed that supported us emotionally.
I am sure if some group are ready to come here and open up dialogues, though it
can turn violent and irritating as today, it could atleast create doubts in the
mind of people as to their positions.
I will put in a more detailed report after the convention. very tired
after the day long encounters.
                   in solidarity
                         reshma

Dear Reshma,

Good to hear that Girish Kumar, ShajuVV and quite a few people from
Payyanur and Kannur are supporting this campaign.
Let this campaign  gain further momentum and take rapid strides in
overcoming the bias generated by the caste/gender patriarchs and their
henchpersons.

Lot of regards to you all,
(Venu)
