Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh has reportedly condemned the Maoists’ guerilla attack on the security forces, describing it as an act of cowardice. The fact is that there is nothing especially "cowardly" about "guerilla attack" per se. It is as legitimate as a frontal attack in a war as long as the "attack" itself is legitimate. This is also a slap in the face of Chidambaram who had just issued a certificate to the Chhattisgarh government to the effect that the "situation" there has "improved". Yet at another level, this would only further strengthen the resolve of the Indian state and also the pressure on it to crush the insurgents through armed offensive, triggering more and more bloodshed. Such large-scale casualties would also help to legtimise such gory blood spill in popular mind as a legitimate, and even necessary, response. That way, it may very well turn out to be a Pyrrhic "victory". But it'd be equally foolhardy and criminal on the part of the government to fall in that easy trap and refuse to use this gory tragedy to do a rethink on the whole strategy of trying to quash violence with greater violence and thereby trigger more violence. It is the task of the common citizens to raise their voices in favour of sanity and urge the warring parties to cry an immediate halt to this endless blood spill and compel the government to address the the legitimate and longstanding grievances of the people in the affected regions and also elsewhere on topmost priority to generate confidence in its intentions.
