* * *Screening of films from Jharkhand* * * Two films by *Meghnath and Biju Toppo*, film makers based in Ranchi, will be screened in the *Conference Hall, Press Club, *Thiruvananthapuram on* 29th of July, at 5 pm*. Sri. Meghnath will be present at the screening, to introduce and talk about the films. The screening is organised by Pedestrian Pictures and Friends of Sarat. The following films will be screened. *1. Vikas Bandook Ki Naal Se *(Development Flows from the Barrel of the Gun) Directed by Meghnath and Biju Toppo *2. Gadi Lohardaga Mail *Directed by Meghnath and Biju Toppo A music video “*Gaon Chhodab Nahi*”, made by K.P. Sasi also will be screened. *1. Vikas Bandook Ki Naal Se* The film documents the state violence on the people affected by so called development projects in five states of the country. In the name of development, the resource rich adivasi homelands are encroached upon by the corporates, causing only displacement and suffering for the adivasis. Any resistance against this unjust intrusion is suppressed by with the help of state power. Development Flows from the Barrel of the Gun had won the silver conch award at Mumbai International Film Festival 2006. *2. Gadi Lohardaga Mail* A narrow gauge train ran on the Ranchi-Lohardaga track from 1907 to 2004, when it was stopped. The film is an interesting documentation of many people’s memories of the narrow-gauge train, shot before it was stopped. Through Nagpuri folk songs, the personalities on the train brings forth the angst of the one leaving their beloved, their homes, their families and their roots, perhaps for ever. These were songs that were sung in those days when the train became popular, especially among the tribal people emigrating for work in the tea estates of Assam. *About the Filmmakers* Meghnath and Biju Toppo belong to *Akhra*, a group working in the field of culture and communication in Jharkhand. Akhra is a pioneering group that has been making films on the indigenous people’s issues since 1995. Meghnath has been an active participant in many struggles against destructive development. As a film maker he tries to document voices that remain unheard. Currently, he is a teacher of Mass Communication at St. Xaviers College, Ranchi. Biju Toppo is one of the first adivasi film makers to have effectively used the camera and new media technologies to represent the point of view of the indegenous community of the country, which is largely unseen in the mainstream media.
