KATHMANDU: Jhalanath Khanal, chairman of CPN-UML on Thursday urged
UCPN-Maoist chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to withdraw his name from
the prime ministerial candidacy in the ongoing runoff election.

In a joint meeting of CPN-UML and the UCPN-Maoist held at the Maoist
Parliamentary Party Office, Singha Durbar, Khanal, initially UML's prime
ministerial candidate before he withdrew from the race after it became
apparent that he would not succeed in generating a two-thirds majority, as
demanded by his party's CC meeting, asked Prachanda to withdraw from the
election.

Responding to Khanal, Prachanda said that he would withdraw from the
election provided Ram Chandra Poudel who is contesting against him in the
Prime Ministerial election does the same.

Emerging from the meeting Khanal said that it is better that both the
parties quit from the candidacy than make a mockery of the election. The
House has failed to elect a prime minister for the fourth time.

Vice chairman of the UCPN-Maoist Narayankaji Shrestha said that they were
ready to withdraw their candidacy from the election but UML should be clear
about ensuring the same from the NC. He also said that being the biggest
party in the CA they should be given a chance to lead the new government.

Leaders Bam Dev Gautam and Bharat Mohan Adhikari among others were
representing UML while leaders Mohan Baidhya ‘Kiran’, Ram Bahadur ‘Badal’
and others represented the UCPN-Maoist in the meet.

Maoists' totalitarianism led Madhes-based parties to deny support:
MinisterThursday,
12 August 2010

A government minister has revealed that the Madhes-based political parties
didn't extend their support to Unified CPN (Maoist) in the election for a
prime minister because of it being a "totalitarian" party.

Minister without Portfolio Laxman Lal Karna, who is also vice-chairman of
Sadbhawana Party, opined that the Maoists can't be trusted with the
government leadership until they abandon their weapons and return the
private properties they seized during the conflict period.

Speaking at a programme organised in Parsa Thursday, he accused the Maoists
of engaging in all kinds of dirty games to grab power and warned that the
former rebel party is trying to impose totalitarianism in the name of
democracy in the country.

"This is why, the Madhes-based parties will not support the Maoists in the
next round of election for a prime minister," he said, adding that peace and
constitution cannot be ensured until the time the Maoists renounce violence
and implement past agreements and understanding.

Sadbhawana Party is one of the four Madhes-based parties that comprise the
United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF).

Maoist CC meet deferred till Aug 19; consultations for 'Maoist-led unity
govt' to continueThursday, 12 August 2010

The central committee meeting of the Unified CPN (Maoist), which started at
the party headquarters Perisdanda Thursday afternoon, has been postponed
till 19 August.

The meeting adjourned soon after party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is
also the prime ministerial candidate, presented a 13-point political draft
in which he has analysed the current political scenario and has outlined the
party's future plan. No discussion took place during today's meeting.

According to Maoist spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma, the meeting has been
deferred as the senior leaders will remain busy in consultations with
leaders of various parties as part of the ongoing efforts to win their
support in the prime minister run-off slated for August 18.

The party will continue efforts for formation of a consensus government led
by the party, he informed.

The Maoist central committee meeting started amid deepening political
uncertainty with four rounds of voting for the prime minister ending in
fiasco.

In the recent meetings with leaders of the Nepali Congress and the UML,
Maoist leaders had said they were ready to withdraw the PM candidacy
provided the latter agreed to amend the Interim Constitution to revive the
system of consensus government.

Sources said the Maoist CC meeting will also take up the internal dispute
that has intensified after vice chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai held a
separate meeting with Indian Prime Minister's special emissary Shyam Saran
during his recent Nepal visit.

Some leaders close to the party establishment said Bhattarai would be asked
to clarify why he had to meet the Indian envoy separately.
