In the recently concluded 10th Anniversary Convention of the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP) from 10th - 12th December 2010, it was resolved that the Coalition would intensify the struggle against the ambitions of the Indian nuclear establishments to endanger people’s life and country’s ecology by its ambitious expansion plans. Unleashed by the Indo-US nuclear deal, this nuclear expansion is being pushed undemocratically and ignoring serious questions regarding the economic, environmental, and social viability of such projects.
The biggest of these power projects is being set up in Jaitapur, Maharashtra, where the local people are resolutely resisting the project fight ever since the NPCIL team went for survey in that area four years ago. As a follow up measures of the CNDP decision, a fact-finding team visited Jaitapur to interact with local people, organisations and the civil society of the area. The team was comprised of Praful Bidwai, Bhasha Singh, S P Shukla, Vaishali Patil, Rafeeq Ellias. It visited the area from 7th-9th January 2011.
