New Delhi: The results of the 2011 Assembly polls in West Bengal show that as compared to 2006, the Trinamool Congress combine has increased its vote share by eight per cent to 49 per cent. The Left Front which garnered a 50 per cent vote share in 2006 has managed to secure 41 per cent this time around. While the 41 per cent figure indicates that the Left Front has retained its core support base, the swing has been big enough to bring its tally to a paltry 63 in a 294-seat Assembly. In Tamil Nadu, the swing has been massive. AIADMK and its allies have garnered a massive 58 per cent vote share - much higher than the 40 per cent mark it posted in 2006. It is also 13 per cent more than the 45 per cent share that allowed DMK and its allies to form the government in 2006. The scams have taken a serious toll on Karunanidhi’s dispensation; the DMK alliance has secured just a 37 per cent vote share. In Assam, constructive talks with ULFA and the promise of lasting peace find the Indian National Congress increase its vote share by a handsome 12 per cent margin. In 2006, the Congress got 31 per cent of the votes. In 2011, they have increased the same to 43 per cent. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) saw its share slide from 20 per cent in 2006 to 17 per cent in 2011. In Kerala, as with the number of seats won, the difference between the CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led UDF in terms of vote share is also less drastic than in other states. The UDF has a 46 per cent vote share while the LDF has secured 45. TMC's ally Congress won 27 seats and is leading in 14. As per the trends, the Trinamool Congress could form the ministry on its own as the magic figure for government formation is 148. Left Front major, CPM has so far bagged 23 seats and is ahead in 17. Left Front partner, Forward Bloc won three seats and was ahead in nine, while RSP has won four seats and is ahead in three and CPI has won one seat and is leading in one seats. Independents were leading in two and others in six. Majors Left Front figures, including Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Finance minister Ashim Dasgupta, Industry minister Nirupam Sen, Housing minister Goutam Deb and IT minister Debesh Das were trailing. Bhattacharjee drove to the Raj Bhavan in the afternoon and submitted his resignation to Governor M K Narayanan. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee dedicated her party's stupendous victory to 'Ma, Mati, Manush' drawing parallels with the freedom struggle and promised good governance, while saying that there would be an end to "autocracy and atrocities". "Not only in Bengal and India, people across the world were waiting for this verdict and we express our gratitude to all of them," Banerjee said. Accepting the poll verdict, a joint statement by the chief minister and Left Front chairman, Biman Bose described the debacle as 'unexpected'. They, however, said the Left would play the role of a responsible and constructive opposition in the assembly. They would also ascertain the reasons for the defeat of the Left Front, they said.
