Dear friends, Greetings from KSMTF! The fisheries sector is confronting major crisis today. The fishing community is being threatened to lose their access to sea, sea shore and the water bodies due to the policies and interventions of the Central and state governments. While the Central Government is opening the doors of access and exploitation of our marine resources for the foreign vessels, both the central and state governments are giving away the ocean and coast to the corporates. In Kerala, the recent invasion on this sector is with the involvement of sea planes, creating a number of problems for the traditional inland fishing community. Permission is also granted for the transport of ships carrying goods across the coastal waters. The other move is to install a gas pipe line from Kochi to Kayankulam through the sea.Discussions are also on to allow sand mining inside the sea and to reclaim sea waters into land for the lobby of tourism and real estate industry. At the same time, no initiative is being undertaken to provide minimum rehabilitation for the fishing communities who have lost their livelihood, equipments, houses, etc due to the increasing erosion of the sea on the coastal lands. So far, this is not even considered as a national disaster. Hence, there is no relief being provided by the central government to such affected people. There is not even a fisheries ministry in India today to listen to such grievances of the fishing community. In this context, under the leadership of KSMTF and NFF, an announcement was made for a large protest and struggle to be held on September 7 and 8, 2013, on the coast of Alappuzha district, Kerala, involving the activists of the fishing community from different states. On 8th there will be a huge rally from collectrate to sea shore in Alappuzha. We invite your participation and support for this event. Since the event is going to incur major financial expenses, we request whatever contributions you/your organization can extend, so that it can be held with meaningful results. Enclosing the details for sending your contribution: KSMTF, A/C No. 30287328928, IFSC : SBIN 0008593, State Bank of India, Arthunkal Branch, Alappuzha.
