Keep Up The Pressure - Calls to Congress Needed Now More than Ever

Friends,
I’ve been encouraged by the news of a possible diplomatic
settlement of the Syrian chemical weapons crisis. We’ve won two victories.
First forcing President Obama to honor the Constitution and to explore
diplomatic resolution of the crisis. (Reports indicate that facing a loss
in Congress, during the G-20 meeting he broached the possibility of a
diplomatic solution with President Putin of Russia.) That said, we are a
long way from being out of the woods.
We can be hopeful, but the danger of deadly unilateral U.S. military
attacks, in violation of the most essential international law, the U.N.
Charter. The Washington Post reported today that, with Russia and China
opposing a U.N. Security Council resolution that includes the threat of
military attack. members of the US Senate are drafting a new resolution,
which supports diplomacy but also authorizes the use of force of military
force if diplomacy does not yield a quick, specific result. This ignores
the fact that Americans do not support a US-led military intervention, even
if one particular plan is rejected. And we have yet to see evidence that
demonstrates the chemical weapons attacks weren’t launched by a rogue
Syrian military unit after President Assad had denied repeated requests to
use the weapons, as has been reported in the German press.
Listening to President Obama, I couldn’t help but remember a
recent New York Times column by Charles Blow in which he wrote that: “…one
can simultaneously express sorrow for the dead, particularly the children,
and resist direct United States military intervention. This is a false
choice that uses the dead children as a mask for America’s militaristic
instinct...”
President Obama also promised that the U.S. missile attacks and
bombing raids stressed will not lead to a U.S. war, with no U.S. boots on
the ground. But history tells us that one of the constants of war (and the
attacks would be acts of war) is that it is unpredictable.
In the wake of the announcement of the diplomatic process, a
number of politicians who prevaricated on their position are now saying
that they would vote against the original resolution. They’re a day late
and a dollar short, because in the coming weeks, they will be called on to
vote for a different resolution that also authorizes deadly military
attacks against Syria.
It is more important than ever that we let our members of
congress know that constituents are opposed to any authorization for the
use of military power in Syria and will only accept a diplomatic resolution
of the crisis.
