Quote INDIA HAS LOST ITS ANCIENT CULTURE, TRADITION AND VALUES. Unquote It is all for the good.
The ancient tradition of India was to burn woman alive on the pyre of the just deceased husband. Rammohun Roy and others had to fight long and hard to prohibit such barbarity by law in the teeth of fierce opposition by those who upheld the "tradition". Yet stray cases of "Sati" are reported even today, from Rajasthan in particular. Bramhins used to have innumerable wives. Widows were not allowed to remarry. Ishwarchandra Bidyasagar fought a valiant battle to legalise remarriage of Hindu widows. Women were confined within the four walls of home. They did not have the right to study scriptures. Quote 2. Day and night woman must be kept in dependence by the males (of) their (families), and, if they attach themselves to sensual enjoyments, they must be kept under one's control. 3. Her father protects (her) in childhood, her husband protects (her) in youth, and her sons protect (her) in old age; a woman is never fit for independence. Unquote [Source: <http://hinduism.about.com/library/weekly/extra/bl-lawsofmanu9.htm >.] That's what the great sage Manu laid down. So no point lamenting the loss of tradition which was stinkingly misogynist. Women can no longer be defined in terms of men related to her. They cannot be treated as mere property of men. Her independent identity has got to be to be recognised. Women are no longer ready to meekly obey men's diktats. Those olden, and to some golden, days are gone. Gone for ever.
