After a month-long political drama, Chairman of the Interim Election
Council Khil Raj Regmi has finally summoned the first meeting of new
Constituent Assembly on January 22.

This became possible after President Ram Baran Yadav, during a meeting at
Shital Niwas today, asked IEC Chair Regmi to convene the first meeting of
the newly elected Constituent Assembly (CA). "You can act as per the
constitution,” the President had reportedly told IEC Chair Regmi during
their meeting.

According to article 69(1) of the Interim Constitution, the prime minister
or head of the government will have the authority to convene the first CA
meeting. It has to be called within 21 days after the results of the CA
election is made public by the Election Commission.

The first meeting of the newly elected CA will be held at the International
Convention Centre (ICC) in New Baneshwor at 3 pm on January 22 (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa is all set to chair
the first meeting of the new CA. He is getting this honour by virtue of
being the senior-most member of the new CA. But before that, the President
will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Thapa at the opportune
time. Thereafter, Thapa will administer the oath of office to other members
of the new CA in a ceremony that will take place a day before the CA is
set to convene.
