Joke of the year: Subramanyian Swamy says `The FTII students who are protesting are Naxals!’ Swamy is either underestimating the Naxals or overestimating the FTII students. The students have been conducting a peaceful protest on a genuine demand which every sensible film maker in or cultural personality in this country will support. The national opinion is growing in solidarity with the students. By branding them as Naxalites, Swamy is agreeing to my age old argument that cinema is more powerful than the gun. And if Naxalites have chosen to transform their strategies into peaceful protests, then time has come to cut the huge funding our police departments and intelligence agencies receive in the name of combating Naxalism and terrorism, whereby innocent people have been consistently put behind the bars under draconian laws without trial.
