Modi tweets inconsequentially, but he didn't tweet on Dadri lynching: Arun Shourie TNN | Nov 2, 2015, 11.07 PM IST HIGHLIGHTS • Arun Shourie accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of deliberately maintaining silence on incidents like Dadri lynching. • Shourie also agreed with the suggestion that Modi and Amit Shah were pitting one community against another in Bihar. • He also attacked finance minister Arun Jaitley's defence NEW DELHI: Former Union minister Arun Shourie, a supporter-turned-critic of Narendra Modi, mounted a sharp attack on the prime minister, saying he was not a section officer but a leader who is expected to lead by example and set moral standards for the country. "Prime minister is not a section officer of the homoeopathy department. He is not head of a department. He is the prime minister. He has to show the country the moral path. He has to set moral standards," Shourie said in a TV interview. READ ALSO: This government is Congress plus a cow, Arun Shourie says This is the second time in recent days that Shourie has lashed out at the government and the PM over failing to act against instances of violence and the controversy over beef, derisively describing the NDA government as a copy of the UPA, saying, "It is Congress with a cow." Shourie, who said he had purposely decided not to renew his primary membership of BJP, accused Modi of deliberately maintaining silence on incidents like Dadri lynching while his ministerial and party colleagues kept the issue "alive" merely to win Bihar elections. Stung by Shourie's criticism, BJP had previously said the former minister was acting out of the "pain" of not being part of the government. He also agreed with the suggestion that Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were pitting one community against another in Bihar and cited a Pakistani analyst to say that while the neighbouring country was trying to get out of the pit, India was slowly going down. Coming out in support of writers, academics and artistes returning their awards against the "climate of intolerance", Shourie questioned BJP labeling the protests as manufactured and said intellectuals were "conscience-keepers" of the country and their motives should not be questioned. Praising scientists like P M Bhargava and Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy, who have expressed concern over incidents of intolerance, Shourie wondered whether they could be called rabid, a term used by Jaitley. The finance minister had described the protestors as "rabid anti-BJP" elements. Rejecting BJP leaders' oft-repeated statements that the PM could not be expected to speak on any and every issue, Shourie said he was not speaking on issues that he should. He referred to Modi's tweets on issues like Union minister Mahesh Sharma's birthday soon after the Dadri lynching, the stampede in Mecca and the blast in Ankara. "But he kept silent on the Dadri incident and incidents like killing of two Dalit children (in Haryana). He is keeping silent while his party colleagues and ministers are keeping the issue alive," he said. Asked if Modi's silence was political, he said, "I think so. You can't have it both ways.
