Interestingly, a small section with self interests in Kerala have been
trying to campaign on an extremely obvious development disaster called
`Vizhinjam International Transit Harbour’, which would only benefit Adani,
the real estate mafia, the mining mafia and the corrupt bureaucrats and
politicians. The Kerala Government with cooperation from Modi Government
has decided to provide two hills from the Western Ghats (one from Kerala
and another from Tamil Nadu) and fill the sea for about 4 kilometers for
the construction of this project. The project will affect the and homes and
livelihood of fisher folk living in around 25 villages on the north of the
proposed harbour. There will be other environmental implications on the
southern side of the proposed project. The campaign from racketeers
benefiting from this project is that this project will convert Kerala into
a Dubai or Singapore – they have still not decided which one! The project
is going to dump two hills from the Western Ghats into a sea which is an
extremely rich bio diversity region. Below the sea, where the rocks are to
be dumped, there is a Silent Valley with rich bio diversity under the sea
with many rare species. The bio diversity intense regions in the sea are
called `Wadge Banks’ or sometimes `Wedge Banks’. There are only 20 such
banks in the ocean all over the world and there is only one such precious
region in India and it is situated from 40 kilometers from the proposed
harbour to the region of Kanyakumari waters. The environmental activists in
Kerala are well aware about the environmental implications of the forests,
due to the follow up of the Silent Valley struggle and the Western Ghats
March. But there is still a great deal of ignorance on the bio diversity
and environmental implications of the sea. What is going to be destroyed is
a Silent Valley under the sea. To those who represent Adanis, real estate
mafias, mining mafias, the corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in Kerala,
my question is: If you convert Kerala into a Dubai or Singapore (a claim
which you can never fulfill, since Kerala is a totally dependent economy on
places like Dubai, Singapore and other countries) can you recreate a wedge
bank in either Dubai or Singapore?
