The academic freedom is becoming a larger issue these days. Activists have
been always having suspicion on the role of academics during the last two
and a half decades. There has been an emergence of a non-academic organic
intelligentsia who were more closely connected with social issues and
people’s movements more than the academic world during this period.
However, at the moment, even the smallest critical space within the
academic world is getting threatened. Tighter control, saffronisation of
education, saffronisation of heads of academic institutions, control in the
allocation of funds, surveillance, repression on resistance, etc are
becoming more and more a norm. At the same time, academic institutions and
service organizations of the minorities are also getting threatened. Apart
from the human rights NGOs and those NGOs which express their critical
views, even the institutions belonging to minorities are getting
threatened. The largest number of organizations whose funds have been
blocked belong to the Christians. Unfortunately, we do not find any
resistance here even through a basic legal battle. Before they are asked to
bend down, most of them are prepared to crawl!
