If you want to understand the meaning of the word `human rights' in India,
all you have to do is to study the status of under trials in Indian
prisons. Who are these under trials? 68 per cent of Indian prisons are
filled with `under trials. No judge has ever claimed that they are
`guilty'. Then, why are they in prisons? Which communities do they come
from? After spending years in prisons, when they come out with a judgement
of being `innocent', what have they lost in their lives? Do they get any
compensation for wasting their lives in prisons? Do their families,
relatives and friends get compensation for social harassment and social
isolation? Are the guilty officers ever punished? Again, if you want to
know the meaning of the word `human rights' in India, all you have to do is
to study the drop outs in Indian schools. Which sections do they come from?
Why do they drop out? Which marginalised sections do they represent? Can
they be competitive? Why should many of them commit suicide instead of just
dropping out from the education system? Happy Human Rights Day !
