[It is quite unfortunate that it is left to the Students' Islamic
Organisation (SIO) to take up the issue.
The decision of the powers that be to exclude Urdu while listing ten
languages of course speaks of a perverted mindset.]

Students' group moves SC seeking NEET in Urdu

Yogita Rao | TNN | Feb 17, 2017, 10.27 PM IST

MUMBAI: The Students' Islamic Organisation (SIO) moved the Supreme
Court against the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's
decision to not conduct NEET in Urdu.
The organization has claimed that leaving Urdu as a medium not only
deprives a large number of students studying science in Urdu medium of
equal opportunity, but is also a violation of right to life. The
students are being denied the opportunity to pursue a career in health
sciences and shape their lives as per their choice and interest, said
SIO in a statement.

It further stated that ***NEET is being conducted in 10 languages in
2017-18, but Urdu is not included in the same. "It seems to be a
selective discrimination of a particular language by the ministry even
after several representations," said Mohammad Ali, secretary, public
relations of SIO.*** [Emphasis added]

Urdu is the sixth most spoken language in the country, whereas the
other languages which rank seventh, eighth and even 12th are included
in NEET, said Ali, adding that NCERT textbooks too are available in
the language.

Exclusion of Urdu from NEET-UG 2017!

Friday, February 03, 2017
By A Staff Reporter

The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) is to file a petition
opposing exclusion of Urdu from the National Eligibility cum Entrance
Test (NEET) 2017. This test which was earlier supposed to be conducted
in eight languages including Hindi, English and Marathi will now have
additional two more languages - Oriya and Kannada. However, Urdu,
which was earlier supposed to be made a medium for conducting NEET is
still not included in the notification by the government. Yesterday,
the SIO held a press conference regarding this at Press Club, CST.

***Reportedly, last year around 1650 had registered to write MH-CET in
Urdu, compared to 1670 who opted for Marathi. The Urdu medium students
outnumbered students in Marathi, Oriya and several other regional
language junior colleges. To this, the PR secretary of SIO said, “This
is evident that the government's decision does not stem from any
logical reasoning and is rather symptomatic of its inherent bias
against minorities. Now, we will file a writ petition in Supreme Court
opposing the exclusion of Urdu from NEET."*** [Emphasis added.]

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) notification of
NEET-UG 2017 has no mention of the language. Due to this, these
students will be forced to appear by opting an unfamiliar language in
which they have not studied. Specially, subjects like Physics,
Chemistry and Biology. "The problem with not including the language
(Urdu) is that NEET is the only medium from which students can
approach the medical education in India. So, but not having Urdu, many
deserving students won't get any opportunity," shared one of the
students.
