This is not too much out of the line.
The Shia leadership in Lucknow, their main seat in UP, had backed Rajnath
Singh.

During the last assembly election:
<<Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Naqvi is one of the most influential leaders of
Shia Muslims in India today. From his seat in Lucknow, he makes
proclamations that influence and sway the Shia community who constitute
around 25 percent of the Muslim population in the country.
...
Jawad has recently announced his support for the Bahujan Samaj Party.
A week earlier, while speaking to HuffPost India at his home in old
Lucknow, Jawad said, "The people must choose between the BSP and the BJP.">>

And here is the Waqf board's track record:

<<In a fresh turn of events, the Shia Central Waqf Board of Uttar Pradesh
today told the Supreme Court that a mosque could be built in a Muslim-
dominated area at a reasonable distance from the disputed site in Ayodhya.
The Board also told the apex court in an affidavit that the Babri Masjid
site was its property and only it was entitled to hold negotiations for an
amicable settlement of the dispute.>>

disputed site' at

That's precisely why Adityanath is pushing for the merger of the two Waqf
boards to install Waeem Rizvi as its head.
That'd "solve" the Ayodhya/Babri issue in a jiffy.

The case is right now before the Supreme Court.
The Sunni Waqf board is a principal litigant claiming property rights over
the disputed site.
