In its affidavit, the SIT further alleged that the “conspiracy” was carried out to dismiss the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state after the 2002 Godhra riots. Patel was political advisor to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at the time. Till May 2004, there was an NDA government, headed by Vajpayee at the Centre. Well before the departure of this government, Modi had - in late 2002 itself, already obtained a fresh mandate. By making this allegation: I. Congress is implicated and Sonia Gandhi too. II. A Muslim - dead for quite a while, is implicated. III. That a Muslim was a Congress leader is highlighted. Leave aside scores of entities, including the Supreme Court itself - by equating Modi with Nero, transfer of court cases outside Gujarat and constituting the subject SIT to reinvestigate a number of cases, the NHRC, various other national and international bodies for upholding human rights and even foreign governments - with the US government even cancelling Modi's visa, censuring Modi's role in the 2002 Gujarat pogrom, here's Vajpayee - the then Prime Minister, with (sheepish?) It bears mentioning that while campaigning for the last Gujarat poll, Modi had floated a very serious conspiracy story involving Pakistan and Ahmed Patel at its centre for which Arun Jaitley would subsequently issue a clarificatory statement in the parliament on behalf of the BJP and in effect dismissed the allegation made by the Prime Minister merely as a part of poll campaign.
